Alstom Grid has successfully completed factory acceptance tests (FAT) for the 16 furnace transformers destined for the Qinghai Salt Lake project in North-West China.

These 65 MVA transformers have the highest current rating of any Electric Arc Furnace transformer in the world, reaching 155 kA. During the design and manufacturing, Alstom adopted various innovative solutions such as a unique winding process, to meet the voltage drop requirements needed to produce such high current.

"With this success, Alstom proves its leadership in special transformer business by setting world record for highest current rating," said Maurice Dres, Alstom Grid Vice-President for the China Region.

These tests have demonstrated the transformers performance in normal and severe operating conditions and their full compliance to the customers technical specifications. The transformers will perform in various high-current conditions to meet the needs of industries using furnace processes.

This project was awarded to Alstom Grid in October 2011 by Qinghai Salt Lake, the largest salt chemical company in China, to deliver 16 of its new 65 MVA Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) transformers to the Qinghai Salt Lake Metal Magnesium Integration Project (Geermu City) and the Qinghai Salt Lake Haina Chemical Company PVC Project (Xining City).
