Alstom ships the main turbine component to Belo Monte Plant

This week, Alstom ships the turbine wheel to the Belo Monte Hydro Plant, which is being built by Norte Energia on Xingu river, in Brazil. Considered one of the largest Francis wheels ever manufactured in the world, the part is one of the main components supplied for the project. The turbine wheel has the function of transforming the water movement into mechanical movement.
The part weighs approximately 320 tons and has around eight meters diameter and is five meters high, the equivalent to the weight of over 320 small cars. The logistic for transportation to the work site will be multimodal, in around 90 days, with the part being transported over land, sea and river.

About the Contract
In February 2011, Norte Energia signed the contract with the ELM Consortium, formed by Alstom, Voith and Andritz, for the supply of 14 620,4 MW Francis turbine-generator sets to the Main Power House of the Belo Monte Hydro Plant, at Sítio Belo Monte, six 39,6 MW Bulb turbine-generator sets to the Complementary Power House, at Sítio Pimental, and some of the other equipment. Alstom will supply 7 Francis turbine-generator sets, hydromechanical equipment, armored busbars and gas insulated substations (GIS) to the 18 generator units of Belo Monte plant.
