About us

Alstom in the Nordics counts around 200 employees working in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark. Most of us work from one of our major offices in Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, but we also have several local offices and service depots to ensure quick and easily accessible maintenance and services to our customers all over the region.

Designing fluidity

Alstom continuously develops, supplies and maintains sustainable and integrated rail solutions for the urban and main line markets. These are technically, economically and environmentally efficient, designed to meet today’s challenges of smarter mobility and tailored to each of the operators and public authorities which they serve.

Alstom is one of the world's leading providers of rail transport infrastructure and sets the benchmark for innovative and environmentally friendly technologies. We build the world's fastest trains and the highest capacity automated metros. Thanks to Alstom’s strategy of expanding its local presence via various types of partnerships and agreements such as joint ventures, strategic partnerships or Alstom industrial sites, the company is close to its customers worldwide. Alstom is present in over 60 countries and employs around 32,800 people.

Our presence has long been strong in the Nordics where we have developed, built and delivered solutions for trains that traffic several of the largest train traffic routes. As a promoter of sustainable mobility, Alstom Transport develops and markets the most complete range of systems, equipment and services in the railway sector.

Due to global warming and other environmental challenges, sustainable transportation will also increase. Rail transportation fits well to those sustainability requirements. But much more important than what we've achieved so far is what we will achieve in the future. The challenges we face in terms of energy, transport and environment mean we have a key role in building sustainable development for future generations. It's about finding new, more effective solutions through long-term thinking, new smarter technology and a close cooperation with our customers and the outside world.

Therefore, our business is not just about trains, but also about people. Everything we do ultimately aims to meet human needs for energy and communications in everyday life, at home and at work.



Since Alstom opened its first office in Sweden in 2003 and after the first order for Arlandabanan, the journey has progressed rapidly and we have become one of the largest actors on the Swedish rail market, with 326 sold trains and other major assignments, including maintenance. From being a "newcomer” with ten employees we have expanded our business and are now present in all the Nordic countries with nearly 200 employees - a proof of Alstom's ambitions to be involved in developing rail services both for travellers and operators in the Nordic region.

In June 2015 Alstom was awarded a contract to further supply SL with 46 X60B Coradia Nordic. These trains have been improved and modified on 450 points and adapted for the Citytunnel The trains are currently running in tests in Sweden and are expected to be in service in 2017 with the opening of the Citybanan.

Alstom has delivered in total 52 trains to Finland (18 Pendolino trains in service throughout Finland, 30 Coradia commuter trains for the metropolitan area and four Pendolino trains for the Allegro high speed connection between Helsinki and St. Petersbourg). Additionally we have delivered traction motors to HKL M200 metro cars and bogies to VR double decker coaches (IC2). 

Pendolino Allegro trains (Sm6)
Alstom signed the contract to supply four Pendolino trains with Karelian Trains Ltd. in 2007 and the trains started operation in December 2010. Karelian Trains Ltd. is a joint venture between VR Group and Russian State Railways OAO RZD. The high speed link has been named Allegro. The trains are based on the Pendolinos which already operate in Finland, featuring the same front-end and being adapted to extreme winter conditions. Each train has seven cars with in total of 344 seats. The trains come with a dual voltage power system as well as dual safety and signalling systems, making them suitable for the Finnish and Russian networks. The journey time on this 450 km long trip has been shortened to three and a half hours. 

Coradia (Sm4)
30 Coradia commuter trains were delivered to VR Group between 1999 and 2005.The maximum speed of these trains is 160 kph and the passenger capacity 284 persons (184 seated + 100 standing). The length of the Coradia trains is 54,8 m, car width 3,2 m, weight 107,0 tons and height 4,4 m. 

Pendolino (Sm3)
18 Pendolino trains have been delivered to VR Group between years 1995 and 2006. The Finnish Pendolino trains are consisting of 6 cars each with totally 309 passengers / train. The length of one Pendolino train is 159 m, car width 3,2 m and the weight of the train 328 tn. The maximum speed of the Pendolino trains is 220 kph. The tilting technology enables the train to drive fast in curves.


Point machines for Jernbaneverket
Frame agreement with Jernbaneverket for delivery of point machines, which started in 2006 and is ongoing. Supply of approximately 1,300 MET point machines in total. In addition support and spares.

Electrification of Bergen Bybane tram network, phase 1. 2008-2010. Delivery of catenary and substation.

World first successful test of  ETCS level 2 baseline 3 application
In July 2016, Alstom and Banedanmark, the Danish railway infrastructure owner, successfully tested an ETCS  (European Train Control System) signalling application. The tests were conducted between Roskilde and Gadstrup, as part of the Danish Eastern network upgrade being delivered by Alstom.

Atlas ERTMS solution for Banedanmark
Alstom will implement the Atlas ERTMS system in eastern Denmark for Banedanmark. In 2009 Danmark, as a country, made a decision to modernize its railway network with ERTMS, the digital signaling system, on 789 trains and 1500 km tracks. The completion of the implementation is set to 2021.

Coradia Lint regional trains for Nordjyske Jernbaner
In June 2015 Alstom was awarded a contract worth €45 million by Nordjyske Jernbaner in Denmark to supply thirteen Coradia Lint regional trains. The trains will enter into service during the autumn 2017 in Denmark, in particular on the Nordjylland’s network.

Greenhouse effect, energy demand, dwindling oil reserves and increasing congestion in growing cities. The biggest challenges the world is facing is about how we are to meet the growing needs of energy and transport, while reducing our environmental footprint by using renewable energy sources, recycling and smarter technology. It is also about building communities that provide mobility and dynamics through better traffic solutions and availability. These challenges are exactly what we do every day, everywhere in hundreds of countries.

At the leading edge of technology

Creating things that are inherently good for the environment, such as public transport, is not enough. Also the products, how they are manufactured, their life cycle and recycling, must constantly improve from an environmental perspective. Therefore, we are constantly working on research, testing and improving existing products and solutions in our advanced research and development centres worldwide. 

Health & safety

Alstom is committed to providing a safe work environment for employees and sub-contractors. The breadth of our commitment is demonstrated in our Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) policy deployed through our EHS management system, alongside more specific programs designed to ensure health and safety for our employees across the globe.

EHS Roadmap 

Alstom commits to maintain and develop a pro-active Environment, Health and Safety culture throughout the Group. Each Alstom entity is responsible for implementing programs and training to achieve best practice for EHS protections. 

Our EHS management involves:

  • assess regularly operations, management systems and procedures;
  • establish measurement systems to ensure compliance with this policy and applicable laws and regulations;
  • communicate with employees, communities, customers and government agencies regarding EHS;
  • consider EHS impact in any change to existing practice.

Alstom’s Zero Serious Accident Programme

Designed to maintain a tight rein on risk management and ensure the reduction of injury throughout our operations, Alstom launched this campaign to allow the Group to:

  • better manage risks related to contractors’ employees;
  • update self-assessment criteria;
  • deploy a process to better analyze incidents in order to anticipate accidents;
  • promote health and safety culture in the workplaces. 

Our history

The Nordic countries have a long and proud history in innovative industries. Alstom has been part of that history for over a hundred years, through our origins in strong companies such as Svenska Turbinfabriks AB Ljungstrom (Stal), Svenska Fläkt, Suomen Puhallintehdas and ABB. Alstom has been present in the Nordics for a century, contributing to the development of the region’s power and transport infrastructure.  

Today, being entirely focused on Transport, it is natural for Alstom to continue its operations in the Nordics - Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. More than ever, Alstom wants to support the countries that face great need for infrastructure investment in terms of rail transport systems, especially since there is political will, knowledge, and opportunities to develop and deliver sustainable transport solutions.

Contract signed on 129 Coradia Nordic X60 to SL - the first delivery took place in April 2005. 

Alstom Transport opens its head office in Stockholm and is from 2015 also the Nordic head quarter.

  • Alstom signs a contract  on maintenance with Östgötatrafiken (Sweden) 2015: Alstom starts to deliver an additional 46 regional trains (X60B Coradia Nordic) to SL (Sweden)
  • Alstom starts to deliver an additional 30 regional trains (X61 Coradia Nordic) to Skånetrafiken (Sweden)
  • Alstom acquires Motala Train in October (Sweden)
  • Alstom signs a contract with Trafikverket for a new traffic management system to be rolled out as standard in Sweden
