The upgrade will result in a 75% particulate emissions reduction in the industrial power plant.

Alstom has recently been awarded a contract, from Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (BaoSteel) in Shanghai, to upgrade the Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) of units 1 and 2 of the captive power plant. The ESP equipments in BaoSteel were originally supplied by MHI Lurgi and have been in service since 1980. The upgrade will reduce particulate emissions, currently greater than 400 mg/Nm3 down to a level of 100 mg/Nm3, thus allowing BaoSteel to conform to Chinas environmental requirements.

The contract scope includes design, supply of materials and equipment as well as technical advisory services during installation and commissioning of the ESP upgrade. The contract also includes supply of Switched Integrated Rectifiers (SIR), Alstoms high-frequency power supply, which optimises the energisation and performance of the ESPs.

ESPs have been used widely to control particulate emissions. ESPs are often the most cost-effective solution due to high removal efficiencies in combination with robustness and low maintenance cost. A large majority of industrial and thermal power units in China are equipped with ESPs. More stringent emission requirements and more challenging conditions due to fuel switching and other process changes result in a need for improved collection efficiency and ESP upgrade. As the world leader in air quality control systems with experience spanning more than 1000 ESP upgrade projects worldwide, Alstom is well positioned to serve this growing sector in China.

"It is a breakthrough and milestone contract for Alstom to demonstrate our ability in terms of emission reduction from existing power plants as well as Alstoms commitment to combat greenhouse effects worldwide and in China. said Richard Yeung, Head of Power, Alstom Power China.
