Alstom has won an order from Vantaa Energy Ltd to modernise and upgrade
one type GT8C gas turbine at the Martinlaakso combined-cycle power
plant, located in the city of Vantaa, Finland. Work will be performed in
mid-2008.

The gas turbine modernisation package includes new blades and vanes, new vane carrier, and a new rotor.

Part of this package includes a lifetime extending GT8C XL turbine upgrade that will extend C-inspection* intervals from 24,000 EOH to 32,000 EOH**, saving one out of every four inspections. The upgrade features improved turbine blades and vanes for rows 1 and 2, an enhanced hot gas casing and inner liner, and an advanced cooling concept.

Improved component durability means less parts replacement or reconditioning work is required, thus reducing the overall maintenance cost of the turbine. Reduced maintenance downtime means increased availability resulting in increased production capacity and revenues.

Pekka Karjalainen, Martinlaakso Plant Manager, observed: Were delighted that Alstom was able to put together a package that addresses our performance and competitiveness needs for the next 15 years.

Hans-Peter Meer, Senior Vice President, Power Service, commented that: Alstoms lifetime extension XL packages are now available for the GT8C type gas turbine, and were very pleased to have been chosen by Vantaa Energy Ltd to help bring its plant to the next level of competitiveness.

Upon completion of this work, Martinlaakso will have the most advanced technology available for the type GT8C gas turbine. In 1997, it implemented Alstoms latest compressor technology (the C2 compressor) in the unit, which increased power output by approximately 3 MW.

Installed in 1995, the 55MW gas turbine operates at base load, and the plant is also used for district heating.
