Keppel Merlimau Cogen (KMC) Pte Ltd as well as Tuas Power Generation Pte Ltd (TPG) have both selected the Alstom ALSPA® Series 6 integrated control system , including gas and steam turbines controls, and Monitoring & Diagnostic System (MDS), as part of their EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contracts, signed recently with Alstom.

The ALSPA system integrates common hardware on a single platform to help reduce maintenance, spare parts and training costs for the plant operators.

The competitive nature of the power market in Singapore increasingly dictates the use of modern flexible control system architectures, combined with advanced decision support applications for optimising power generation. Alstoms ALSPA Series 6 power plant automation application provided to both the Keppel & Tuas power plants is a complete and powerful Distributed Control System that is particularly well adapted to Combined Cycle power plants requiring the highest availability and performance capabilities. Based on high-end technologies and advanced control functions, together with with the ALSPA Human Machine Interface (HMI) and plant optimization software suite, the ALSPA DCS will enable KMC & TPG to operate in a flexible environment.

In addition, KMC also decided to include the ALSPA Series 6 plant simulator into their contract. This state-of-the-art simulator is integrated with online plant management facilities to assist operators in making decisions about changing how a plant operates. Depending on the scenario (e.g. considering fuel costs and power sales), running a What if simulation can help an operator decide on whether to start, stop, increase or reduce load, or to plan/postpone a preventive maintenance outage, thus maximising the plants full potential in a competitive power market such as Singapore.

The complete integrated control system and MDS systems for Keppel and Tuas will be fully executed from the Kuala Lumpur offices, says Chee-Foon Leong, Power Automation & Controls (PAC) Asia Pacific Region Vice President. These important contracts are expected to strongly contribute to the growth of Alstoms PPAC business in Asia Pacific.
