Alstom & Datang Signs Feasibility Study Agreement on CCS Project

China Datang Corporation (Datang) and Alstom signed the feasibility study agreement for CCS Demo Project in Daqing, Heilongjiang province. This is another major step for both parties in forming the long-term strategic partnership to develop carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstration projects following the signing of MOU in September this year. The agreement was signed in the presence of Mr. WANG Sen, Vice President of Datang and Philippe Joubert, Deputy CEO of Alstom.

According to this agreement, Alstom will carry out the study for the 350MW Oxy-Combustion CCS demonstration project located in Daqing, using its know-hows and expertise in oxy-firing technology. Scheduled for operation in 2015, the Daqing CCS demonstration project is the first large scale CCS demonstration project in China and Asia, capable of capturing above 1,000,000 metric tonnes of CO2 annually.

On top of the environmental benefits, the project also has potentials for significant cost reduction in CCS projects. By utilizing Alstom’s state-of-the-art CCS technology, leveraging extensive experience and expertise and adopting localized design and procurement, the project aims to establish the most cost effective CCS demo plant and set a benchmark for the CCS industry.

Philippe Joubert, Deputy CEO of Alstom said, “A milestone for the cooperation between Alstom and Datang, the signing of the feasibility study agreement marks a prosperous beginning of our future cooperation. I am confident that our cooperation on the CCS projects will be a great success and contribute to China’s low-carbon campaign.”

The Daqing CCS demonstration plant will be the first large-scale demo project to adopt the Oxy-combustion technology, enriching the CCS technology mix in China. The successful implementation of this project will significantly drive the development of CCS technology in China.

As a key player in the world power market, Alstom is leading the way in the development of CCS technology and has developed, patented and owns proprietary technology and know-hows for Oxy-combustion and post-combustion capture technologies. These technologies cover the whole range of fuels, including coal, lignite and natural gas, for both power and industrial applications.
