Alstom, Thales and the Austrian Railway (Österreichische Bundesbahnen; ÖBB) presented the first Austrian train for international traffic that was converted entirely with the ETCS (European Train Control System) Level 2 safety system in a test run in Innsbruck on 31 Mai. The order amounted to a value of approximately 90 mio. Euro for Alstom. The vehicle equipment contract assigned to Alstom by ÖBB in December 2009 also contains the option for vehicle maintenance over the next years. At the same time, Thales was charged by ÖBB with equipping the routes.

"Making the systems consistent and converting them to ETCS Level 2 will clearly increase interoperability, quality and thus competitiveness of railbound traffic as compared to road traffic", says Johannes Braun, managing director of ALSTOM Austria GmbH, headquartered in Vienna.
