The hydropower station will be constructed on the Kafue River in central Zambia, about 260 km south of the country's capital, Lusaka. Due to be completed in 2015, the plant will supply 120 MW of renewable electricity to Zambia, where demand for electricity is increasing to support the development of the country's copper industry.

Alstom, as subcontractor for Sinohydro,  will supply two 60 MW Kaplan turbine and generator units and other equipment including the main inlet valve, governing and exciting system. Alstom is  also responsible for supervising site installation and commissioning.

"Alstom won this contract, due to our position as a global leader in hydropower, our leading manufacturing sites, and the strong strategic and global cooperation with Sinohydro," said Jérôme Pécresse, President, Alstom Renewable Power.

The contract for the entire project was awarded to Sinohydro on a turnkey basis by Itezhi-Tehzi Power Corporation Ltd (ITPC), a joint venture consisting of Indian business group Tata and the state-owned Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Ltd (Zesco).

Zambia has an installed base of 1,970 MW,  of which around 1,880 MW consists of  hydropower. The country's peak electricity demand stands at 1,580 MW, outstripping current electricity generation (1,400 MW).  Zesco is Zambia's leading electricity supplier, producing about  80% of the country's electricity.
