Oman Refineries Petrochemical Industries Company (ORPIC) has awarded a RO7.3mn ($18 mn) contract to Alstom in Norway to help reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide from the catalytic cracking units at Sohar refinery. The project includes both a capacity and performance enhancement allowing ORPIC to increase the production at their refinery and at the same time meeting stricter emission limits. The project will be implemented in eighteen months.
Musab bin Abdullah al Mahrouqi, CEO of ORPIC said that the company has allocated $59 mn for environmental projects. In addition to SO2 removal, the plan is to implement odor control. The company has brought international expertise in improving the performance of the refinery's units, especially the water treatment plant.
