Alstom sets industrial benchmark on hazard waste management

18/03/2014

Alstom showcased its industry-leading hazard waste management approach recently at Shijingshan Waste Hazard Communication Meeting. The Meeting, organized by Shijingshan Environment Bureau, was successfully held at Alstom Beizhong Power (Beijing) Co. Ltd. (ABP) site.

Alstom is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its operations, and promoting sustainable development for all stakeholders and partners. With the guidance of local environmental bureaus and led by its management team, ABP has established an Environment Management System, in a bid to realise the target of zero environmental impact. Furthermore, ABP was successfully certified ISO 14001 in 2008, and passed the Beijing Environment Protection Bureau Hazard Waste Standardization Assessment in August 2013 with excellent performance.

For instance, ABP invested RMB500,000 to install two sets of coolant recycle system in Blade Workshop and Turbine Casing Workshop, in order to reduce the emission of hazard waste. The total emission of hazard waste of ABP reduced 60% from 130 tons in 2010 to only 50 tons in 2013. Its EHS department took the initiative of compiling teaching materials and providing regular trainings to all the staff on hazard waste management to ensure the adequate capabilities of dealing with such responsibilities. To enhance the environmental awareness of its employees, ABP actively participated in CSR activities organized by Alstom China such as “Alstom Forest”.

People, sustainability and the environment are at the heart of all of Alstom’s decisions. To limit the environmental impacts of Alstom’s activities, the Group has adopted a set of four main targets for reductions by 2015: energy and water consumption, waste management and airborne emissions. It also strives to stay in line with best practices and meet all certification standards. As of March 31st 2012, 83% of the manufacturing sites of over 200 employees each are certified ISO 14001. The requirements for ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications are integrated in the Alstom EHS Roadmap and contribute to the improvement process of environment, health and safety on sites.
