Alstoms very first 800 kV HVDC[1] converter transformer passed factory acceptance tests in Shandong, China on 1 March 2014.

This converter transformer, the highest voltage level yet for Alstom, will enable State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) to power part of the Jinping to Sunan 2,090 km long UHVDC (Ultra High Voltage Direct Current) power link. The link will transport clean hydropower from generating stations in central western China across to the industrialised coastal area in eastern China.

This leading edge technology is the result of a cooperative project between Alstom Grid and SPECO (Shandong Power Equipment Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of SGCC). The transformer was designed by Alstom Grids leading HDVC experts, based in Stafford, UK and engineers working out of Alstoms Wuhan factory in eastern central China. All the critical materials were supplied by Alstom. The production at SPECO was supervised by Alstom who also provided the necessary training from its experts based in both UK and China. They also undertook critical parts of the production process and bushings were provided from Alstoms factory in Italy.

Alstom is delighted to achieve such a significant milestone, said Lars Martinsson, Vice President of the Power Transformers Product line at Alstom Grid. This reinforces our leadership in the transformer market, and paves the way for tomorrows electrical grid, which will be flexible, efficient, and sustainable an integral part of a smart infrastructure.
