Alstom has been awarded over 5 Euro million in contract by power plant operator Vattenfall Generation AG to deliver and install two 110 kV gas-insulated substations, in the Jänschwalde and Schwarze Pumpe lignite (brown coal) power plants in Brandenburg, Germany. The aim is to ensure a steady supply of electricity to the power plants so that they can operate independently of local power supply. The turnkey substations will be delivered, installed and commissioned by the end of 2014.

The project will deliver Alstoms latest gas-insulated 110 kV substations, type F35, in a compact double busbar design; the design improves reliability, and secures the steady power supply necessary to operate the power plants. Each of the substations will have over 15 switchgear panels, and will be dedicated solely to the lignite power plants. Under the German Renewable Energy Act (Erneuerbare Energien Gesetz), power plant operators are charged a fee for consuming energy from the local electricity supply, which helps operate the plants. This capacity to self-generate energy reduces the need for local electricity supply, and thus provides significant cost-savings to Vattenfall.

This very compact system ensures high reliability and availability of the grid network. These projects confirm Alstoms leading position on the market for gas-insulated substations and open up new cost-saving opportunities for our customers, says Axel Kossmann, Head of Sales at Alstom Grid Germany.

Alstom has been building gas-insulated substations for 45 years a total of 20,000 gas-insulated substations have been installed in 2,500 transformer stations in around 100 countries worldwide.
