Alstom Transport has delivered totally 48 trains to Finland (18 Pendolino trains and 30 Coradia commuter trains), traction motors to HKL M200 metro cars and bogies to VR double decker trains (IC2). Currently we are delivering four new Pendolino Allegro trains to the Helsinki St. Petersbourg high speed connection.
Pendolino Allegro trains (Sm6)
Alstom concluded the contract, worth 120 million euros, on the four new Pendolino trains with Karelian Trains Ltd. in 2007. Karelian Trains Ltd. is a joint venture between VR Corporation and Russian State Railways OAO RZD. The high speed link has been named Allegro.
The trains will be manufactured at the Alstom site at Savigliano, Italy. The delivery and commissioning of the trains started in Spring 2010, the commercial operation will start in December 2010.
The tilting technology will enable the trains to travel between Helsinki and St Petersburg at speeds of up to 220 kph. The journey time on this 450 km long trip will be shortened initially to three and a half hours and later even to three hours. The present travelling time is five and a half hours.
Each train has totally 344 seats in totally seven cars. The trains will be equipped with a business class fully equipped to allow business meetings during the journey, a play room for children, spaces for passengers using a wheelchair and seats for pet-owners. Customs and passport checks will be carried out onboard in a dedicated carriage.
The trains are based on the Pendolinos which already operate in Finland, featuring the same front-end and being adapted to extreme winter conditions. They also include components taken from the very latest generation of Alstom tilting trains, the New Pendolino (traction system, braking system and hydraulic tilting mechanism), and come with a dual voltage power supply system and safety and signalling systems, making them suitable for the Finnish and Russian networks.
Alstom's Pendolino train has been an international success. They are in operation in 10 countries: the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Slovenia, Portugal, Spain, China and Finland. Russia will join the list with the inauguration of the high-speed Helsinki-St Petersburg line. With 95% market share in Europe and the world, Alstom is the uncontested leader in the electric tilting trains sector.
Coradia (Sm4)
30 Coradia commuter trains were delivered to VR Corporation between 1999 and 2005.
The maximum speed of these trains is 160 kph and the passenger capacity 284 persons (184 seated + 100 standing). The length of the Coradia trains is 54,8 m, car width 3,2 m, weight 107,0 tons and height 4,4 m.
The low-floor trains save electricity by reusing current generated braking energy, thus approximately 25 percent of the train's braking energy is reused.
The trains have low-floor setup to enable easy access, ticket vending compartment, space for prams, services for the disabled, space for pets, toilets (toilet for the disabled), space for cycles, air conditioning, passenger information displays and recording security cameras.
Pendolino (Sm3)
18 Pendolino trains have been delivered to VR Corporation between years 1995 and 2006. The trains have been delivered in 3 batches as below:
2 preseries trains in 1995 (ordered in 1992). The Pendolino trains have been designed and developed by Alstom Transport (by that time under the name of Fiat Ferroviaria) in Savigliano, Italy. The preseries trains were manufactured and assembled in Otanmaki factory in Finland in cooperation with Finnish manufacturer Transtech, in order to take advantage of the in-depth knowledge of local requirements and climate conditions. The trains were finally tested in Pasila VR workshop.
8 trains were delivered between 2000-2002 (ordered in 1997) and 8 trains between 2004-2006 (ordered in 2002). These trains were manufactured, assembled and tested in Savigliano, Italy. The trainsets were then delivered to Finland by ship, and commissioned, together with VR, at the VR Turku depot.
The Finnish Pendolino trains are consisting of 6 cars each with totally 309 passengers / train. The length of one Pendolino train is 159 m, car width 3,2 m and the weight of the train 328 tn. The maximum speed of the Pendolino trains is 220 kph. The tilting technology enables the train to drive fast in curves.
