Atlanta’s regional rail system is about to get a whole lot smarter...

...thanks to the newly-announced contract between Rochester, N.Y.-based Alstom Signaling, Inc. and MARTA, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.

Through this 5-year, $117 million deal, Alstom will roll out a state-of-the-art signaling and control system, designed to keep MARTA trains rolling safely and on time.

For MARTA riders, the project will deliver more reliable rail service using cutting-edge train monitoring technology resulting in better on-time performance and a safer rail experience.

In addition, MARTA’s team will benefit from a streamlined operations framework with improved system-wide communications. This means faster response times, lower maintenance costs and the ability to provide a better overall experience for Atlanta-area riders who depend on the MARTA system.

This new contract is another milestone in a series of successful projects undertaken by MARTA and Alstom. In 2002, Alstom was awarded a contract to refurbish 218 of MARTA’s rail cars, all of which had logged at least 1 million miles. The cars were rebuilt from the ground up at Alstom’s rolling stock manufacturing center in Hornell, N.Y., the largest of its kind in the U.S. Beginning in 2005, the cars came back into service with modern interiors, updated drive systems and a fresh coat of paint.
