Successful milestone for Danish signal system

December 17 , 2019 –The Early Deployment Line North which runs from Roskilde to Köge in eastern Denmark opened for commercial service earlier this week. It is the first line in Denmark equipped with both ERTMS trackside, signal solutions on board and fully integrated with Alstom's Traffic Management System. The line is just over 20 km long. The fleet on the line is 12 trains owned by DSB.

Denmark is in the process of replacing its current railway signaling system with ETCS level 2 baseline 3 to increase passenger capacity and reduce delays. Rail Denmark is the first infrastructure owner in Europe to use this baseline version on a national scale. The opening of the line marks a significant milestone for the Danish signal program run by Banedanmark, the Danish infrastructure owner.

"We are very proud to have reached this milestone for the development of the Danish signal program. Alstom has delivered a fully digital system, which provides a more efficient rail system, with greater capacity and at the same time guarantees the highest levels of safety," says Emmanuel Henry, CEO of Alstom Denmark.

Alstom is currently replacing the existing signaling facility in the eastern part of Denmark with ERTMS of approximately 800 km of track. So far, Alstom has equipped over 100 km with the Alstom ERTMS trackside. During the homologation of Denmark's first high-speed line from Copenhagen to Ringsted in November last year, Alstom set a new track for rail speed in Denmark at 255 km / h.

Alstom also has a contract to equip the entire Danish fleet, about 350 trains, with Atlas On-board equipment. In 20 per cent of the fleet, the installation has already been successfully installed and several main operators, including DSB, Arriva, Nordjyske Jernbaner, operate commercial operations with the ERTMS system installed on board the trains. On lines where no Trackside ERTMS is installed yet, the equipped trains run by Legacy Systems distributed by Alstom.

Alstom's deliveries also include a national traffic management system to support the planning of travel on all routes, both with and without ERTMS, across Zealand, Funen and Jutland. The system includes several advanced features specifically designed for railway lines, making the solution the first of its kind in the world.

After 15 years of experience in using ERTMS Level 2 digital signal solutions, Alstom is a global pioneer in development and implementation. With projects in 30 countries, Alstom has installed almost 40% of Trackside ERTMS Level 2 equipment in service in Europe and has equipped over 8,000 trains of 200 different types with its Atlas On-board ERTMS solution. Atlas is a scalable solution that can be adapted to all types of traffic and operating needs: passengers and goods, high-speed or suburban trains.
