Railway pioneer for 150 years in Norway

Alstom is proud to be part of Norwegian rail mobility history for 150 years. Since the 1870’s, Alstom, including Strømmens Værksted, have introduced innovative mobility solutions to the Norwegian railway. We are committed to continue to develop smart, innovative and sustainable mobility solutions that strengthen railway’s position as the greenest public transport mode in Norway. In the timeline below, you will find some of our deliveries in Norway throughout the decades.

  • 1870s

Founded in 1873, Strømmens Værksted built rail cars, including most of NSB’s fleet and Oslo’s first metro cars. Active until the 2000s under Bombardier, it focused on maintenance and modernisation for NSB. The new royal carriage was among the last cars built there.

  • 1950s

In 1950, Bombardier snowmobiles operated in the Norwegian mountains, carrying up to 12 passengers with roof luggage racks. Over 100 were imported, with several preserved. Used as public transport in remote areas, they came in two variants: the B7 (7 seats) and B12 (12 seats).

  • 1970s

In 1970, the first delivery of the regional passenger train Type 69 took place. These trains were produced at Strømmens Værksted and NEBB. In total 88 trains were delivered between 1970-1993. Type 69 is an electric train with three cars and the first in Norway with thyristor control for power regulation with central coupler.

  • 1980s

In 1980, five DI 4 diesel‑electric locomotives were delivered. Built by Thyssen Henschel in Germany (later acquired by Bombardier), the DI 4 could haul both passenger and freight trains and was the first locomotive equipped with asynchronous electric motors.

  • 1990s

In 1996, the first EL 18 locomotives were delivered, with 20 units supplied by ADtranz and SLM. These electric locomotives operate day and night on Dovrebanen, Bergensbanen, Sørlandsbanen and Flåmsbanen, can haul passenger and freight trains, and feature magnetic track brakes.

  • 2000s

In 2001, Bombardier Transportation acquired ADtranz. Strømmens Værksted, part of ADtranz since 1999, became Bombardier Transportation Norway. The company focused on maintenance and modernisation of NSB rolling stock. The new Norwegian Royal Train was among the last cars built there.

  • 2010s

In 2018, Alstom was awarded a Bane NOR contract to equip the entire Norwegian fleet with ERTMS on‑board systems and maintain them for up to 25 years. Installation will finish in 2026. This national ERTMS roll‑out will improve efficiency, reliability, reduce delays and ensure top‑level safety.

  • 2020s

In 2022, Alstom won a landmark contract to supply up to 200 Coradia Nordic regional trains to Norske tog, in a framework deal worth over €1.8 billion—the largest rail procurement in Norway’s history. The first firm order of 30 trains is valued at €380 million.
