Alstom’s Innovia™ portfolio of fully driverless automated people movers (APM) and monorails embody the evolution of successful and dependable transit operations over many years. Designed to specially serve airports, rapidly growing cities and dense urban areas, Innovia solutions operate on dedicated guideways. This ensures a smooth service that does not interfere with surrounding road or runway traffic. The solutions are characterised by exceptional route flexibility, outstanding availability and high efficiency in terms of passenger capacity, energy consumption and land use.

The latest evolution of proven technology

Innovia APM and monorail solutions offer quick, comfortable and convenient service for commuters within cities, to and from airports or between airport terminals. APM trains are made up of single cars that are coupled together, which gives a lot of operational flexibility. People movers can operate elevated, at ground or underground, whereas the monorail’s infrastructure is entirely elevated, giving its passengers a unique travel experience across the city. Innovia monorails are fixed units with walk-through interiors for even greater passenger comfort.

World-leading performance

From London to Guangzhou, Phoenix to Dubai, our rubber-tyre APM and monorail systems transport thousands of passengers reliably, quickly and safely every day. It is an efficient service designed to carry up to 1,150 passengers per train, and it has an exceptional route flexibility allowing for tight bends (22m) and steep gradients (6 per cent) at speeds of up to 80 km/h. Shortest headways significantly reduce travel times for passengers. Windows that can mist over when the vehicles operate close to residential buildings, protecting residents’ privacy, make Innovia solutions ideally suited for dense urban areas.

Minimised land usage and fast construction

Both Innovia systems provide efficient and cost-effective solutions for growing cities. Quiet vehicles wind their way through existing infrastructure on dedicated guideways. The guideway structure is built off-site for fast assembly on-site. Its lightweight design minimises land usage, CO2 emissions and cost, and disruption for civil construction.

Wide range of configurations for different capacity needs

Innovia APMs and monorails offer capacities from 150 to 1,150 passengers per train. Configurations from one to six cars for APMs and two to eight cars for monorails ensure efficient and flexible transport capacities for different urban needs. The vehicles feature spacious and open designs, low interior noise and vibrations as well as large windows to create a bright atmosphere and comfortable journey experience.

Optimised for airport operations

In 1971, Alstom installed the world’s first automated people mover system at Tampa airport, US. Since then, Alstom has continued to deliver airport people mover solutions, supporting now a total of 26 airports around the globe, including 13 of the world’s busiest airports. Allowing for shortest headways and ensuring highest availability rates, Innovia APMs are a perfect fit for frequent airport operations. The trains are made up of single cars that are coupled together for very flexible operations; at peak hours, extra cars can be added during operations to increase capacity.

Map Innovia APM monorail
  • This map shows Alstom’s worldwide Innovia automated people mover (short: APM) and monorail project references.

In the United States, the map highlights project references for Innovia monorails in Newark Liberty International Airport, Jacksonville, Walt Disney World (Florida), Orlando, Tampa International Airport and Las Vegas.

Innovia APMs are in service at the airports of Las Vegas, Orlando, Tampa, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Seattle, Denver, Chicago and Pittsburgh. Innovia APMs are in service in the US cities of Miami, Williamsburg (Virginia) and Irving.

There are only two project references displayed for Middle and South America: the Innovia monorails in Sao Paulo, Brazil and in Santiago De Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.

For Europe, the map shows Innovia APMs at the airports of London (Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick), Frankfurt and Munich, Madrid and Rome.

In Asia Innovia APMs are in service at the airports of Dubai, Jeddah, Kuala Lumpur and Beijing and in the cities of Shanghai, Guangzhou, Taipei, Singapore and Cairo. Innovia monorail are in place in Cairo and Bangkok.

  • Innovia monorail Cairo, Egypt

The National Authority for Tunnels has chosen the consortium of Alstom, Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors to design and build two Innovia monorail lines in Cairo. A 57 km line will connect East Cairo to the New Administrative Capital and a second 42 km line will connect the 6th October City to Giza.

  • Innovia monorail Bangkok Pink and Yellow line, Thailand

In 2017, Alstom was awarded a contract to deliver fully automated monorail systems for the Pink (34.5km) and Yellow (30.4km) lines in Bangkok. The Yellow Line started service in June 2023 reducing journey time to a third in the heavily congested area of the city.

  • Innovia APM R for Bukit Panjang, Singapore

Alstom was awarded an asset replacement contract by Land Transport Authority, in 2018, for the Bukit Panjang LRT line, for the design and build of the new Innovia APM R cars, delivering a signalling system upgrade for 13 stops, along with a 10- year maintenance and spare parts supplies contract. Alstom will supply a fleet of 19 Innovia APM R cars, retrofit 13 existing Innovia APM cars, as well as upgrade its current Alstom Cityflo 550 rail control and signalling to the advanced Cityflo 650 CBTC solution.

  • Innovia APM Los Angeles International Airport, US

In June 2018, Alstom and its consortium partners were chosen to design, build, finance, operate, and maintain a new automated people mover system. This project will see Alstom design and supply 44 Innovia APM vehicles along with the highly proven Cityflo 650 automatic train control system. In addition, as part of a joint venture, Alstom will provide 25 years of operation and maintenance services.
