Sustainability at Alstom

Our purpose is to make rail the backbone of sustainable transportation, helping build societies that are connected, inclusive and resilient. Sustainability is embedded in Alstom's strategy, operations and solutions, guiding how we reduce environmental impact, care for people, act ethically and create long-term value.

As a global leader in mobility, Alstom takes a holistic approach - covering environmental stewardship, social responsibility, ethical business practices and robust governance - while supporting the transition to low carbon, high-resilience transport systems around the world.

Rail is the most sustainable way to connect people and places

The world is continuing to urbanise rapidly, boosting transportation demand.

Rail is inherently sustainable. It uses significantly less energy and produces far fewer greenhouse gas emissions per passenger kilometre than road or air transport. Increasing the share of rail is one of the most effective ways to reduce global transport emissions, ease congestion and improve public health.

  • 23%
of worldwide carbon emissions from energy use come from transport
  • ~75%
of the global population will be living in urban areas by 2050
  • x2
the global demand for passenger traffic could more than double between 2015 and 2050

Environment

We move towards net-zero mobility and resource preservation in our operations and solutions

The aim of the Paris Agreement is clear: carbon neutrality must be achieved by 2050 to limit the rise in average global temperatures to well below 2°C by the end of the century. Alstom is committed to science-based CO2 emissions reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement.

Alstom supports the transition to net-zero mobility by leading the rail industry in innovation and progress. We place low-carbon resource-efficient technologies at the heart of our portfolio, while adapting to the changing environment.

We apply rigorous eco-design principles to minimise the lifecycle impacts of our products and services, while adopting circular models to preserve resources and safeguard biodiversity.

Society

We provide value for society

Sustainability means delivering lasting value for customers, passengers and society. We achieve this through mobility solutions that are accessible, safe and inclusive, while remaining low carbon across their full lifecycle. Our strategy strengthens environmental and social performance, supports people and communities, and ensures the highest standards of ethics, transparency and governance.

We support this by fostering the care and development of our people, pushing for training and growth opportunities, providing a supportive and inclusive workplace, and ensuring their health and safety.

We act responsibly on every front

Our dedication to responsible business ensures we act with integrity and credibility in everything we do. Ethics & compliance, human rights, risk management and responsible procurement require strong rules, transparency and an accountable value chain. All these practices are essential to long term performance and trust.

We shape public debate and common initiatives

Our commitments to making the world more sustainable and fighting climate change extend beyond our own business activities. Alstom as teamed up with numerous leading bodies working to promote corporate involvment in overall sustainable development.

In 2008, Alstom joined the United Nations' Global Compact organisation, designed to encourage companies to commit to a set of key values spanning human rights, labour standards, environmental protection and ethics in business practices.

Alstom is a member of the Paris Process on Mobility and Climate (PPMC) and an active participant in the UN Climate Change Conferences, with targets set by the Paris Agreement. The Group continues to support UNFCCC forums (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) to show how its technologies support the transition towards a low-carbon-emissions society.

Alstom is a member of the "Sustainable Low Carbon Transport Partnership" (SLoCaT) initiative that brings together international players committed to sustainable mobility.

Alstom holds the chair of the UNIFE - Sustainable Transport Committee (STC) with Sustainability and CSR Vice-President as the chairperson.

As a member of the International Union of Public Transport (UITP), Alstom signed its Charter of Sustainable Development.
