Alstom in Finland

Alstom is a key player in the Finnish railway market. To date, Alstom has delivered 12 metro cars, 46 electrical locomotives, and over 50 trains in Finland, including the Pendolino high-speed trains. 

The Alstom site in Helsinki hosts an engineering team which is developing centralised train control systems for mainline and urban eco-systems.

Our comprehensive product portfolio range from high-speed trains, metros, monorail and trams to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility solutions.

    Coradia Sm4 trains, longer-distance Helsinki commuter trains, delivered to VR Group
  • Coradia Stream (Sm4)

    VR ordered 10 Coradia Stream trains in 1996, followed by an option for 20 EMUs in 2002. These 2‑car trains, with 284 seats, operate at up to 160 km/h and are used for commuter services in Helsinki and on the regional link to Tampere.

  • Pendolino high-speed train (Sm3)

    VR initially ordered 10 trains in the early 1990s, then added 8 tilting Pendolinos in 2002, for a total of 18. They operate on key Finnish routes such as Helsinki–Turku, Helsinki–Jyväskylä and Helsinki–Oulu. Each 6‑car train carries up to 287 passengers at 220 km/h.

  • Pendolino (Allegro) train

    In 2006, Alstom was awarded a contract to deliver 4 high‑speed tilting trains with 342 seats for the Helsinki–St Petersburg line, cutting travel time on the 450 km route from 5.5 to just over 3 hours. The Allegro trains use distributed power and run on both 25 kV AC and 3 kV DC.
