ALSTOM to supply another block to Lumut Power Plant making
it the largest independent combined-cycle power plant in South
East Asia

ALSTOM has been awarded a turnkey contract worth over 340
million euros for a 650 MW combined-cycle power plant and
associated equipment to be installed at the Lumut Power Plant
in State of Perak, Malaysia. GB3 Sdn Bhd, a fully owned
subsidiary of Malakoff Berhad, placed the contract. Malakoff is
the largest independent power producer in Malaysia with total
power generating capacity of over 2,000 MW.

This will be the third combined-cycle block for the Lumut
Power Plant and will provide an additional 650 MW, making Lumut
the largest independent natural gas-fired combined-cycle
facility in South East Asia. ALSTOM will supply 3 x 165 MW
GT13E2 gas turbines, a steam turbine, three heat recovery steam
generators, electrical generators, the entire auxiliary system,
control system and interconnection facility. The Company also
has responsibility for the supervision of erection and
commissioning works.

ALSTOM supplied the first two combined-cycle blocks for
Lumut, each consisting of three GT13E2's operating in
conjunction with a common steam turbine. These two blocks, with
a total capacity of 1300 MW, became operational at the
beginning of 1996 and have accumulated over 160,000 operating
hours.

The third block will be built in phases so that the three
gas turbines will start operation in late 2001 and early 2002
in simple-cycle mode, thus helping to cope with the rapid
increase in Malaysia's power demand. The three gas turbines
will be converted to combined-cycle in early 2003, hence
providing the full output of 650MW.

The GT13E2 fleet, which comprises 60 units worldwide,
represents proven technology with over 880,000 fired hours on
gas or oil and an established fleet reliability of over
99%.

ALSTOM is the global specialist in energy and transport
infrastructure. The Company serves the energy market through
its activities in the fields of power generation, power
transmission and distribution, power conversion and electrical
contracting and the transport market through its activities in
rail and marine.

Following the full integration of the power generation
activities, ALSTOM today has annual sales in excess of 20
billion euros and employs approximately 140,000 people in over
70 countries.
