For the contract, ALSTOM will completely
refurbish the metro cars, which were built between 1983 and 1988,
replacing the existing propulsion systems with its
state-of-the-art ONIX traction drives, and installing an advanced
cab signaling system. This will significantly reduce the car's
energy consumption and maintenance costs, while improving overall
reliability. Work will be carried out at ALSTOM's Hornell and
Rochester, NY, facilities. Deliveries are scheduled from August
2002 through June 2005.

Michel Moreau, President of ALSTOM's Transport Sector, said :

'We are delighted by WMATA's choice of ALSTOM. This contract
represents the Washington metro's largest single order and is the
most comprehensive fleet renovation it has ever undertaken. This
order represents an important step in the development of ALSTOM
Transport in the United States.'
