ALSTOM will supply propulsion systems to Moscow
Metro

The cars are a brand new design of ' light metro ' developed
together by Moscow Metro, Metrowagonmash (the leading Russian
metro car builder) and ALSTOM. They will operate initially on the
new line under construction for the ' CITY ' Business centre in
Moscow, and later on further lines planned in Moscows
districts.

The ONIX IGBT propulsion which will power these new cars has
already been tested thoroughly on Moscows heavy,
Yauza-type metro cars with three prototype drives. These
successful trials played a significant role in convincing the
Moscow Metro and Metrowagonmash that ALSTOMs propulsion
was the best choice for their new trains. During the trials the
propulsion systems proved to be very reliable and allowed a
significant reduction in energy consumption. This latter point is
of particular importance to meet Moscow City Authorities
Energy Saving Plan objectives.

Although adapted for the specifics of Moscows very
demanding requirements, the drives are from the very successful
family of ONIX propulsion systems that are now operating on most
of the worlds leading metro systems. To date, ALSTOM has
supplied over 5000 ONIX propulsion drives world-wide, for all
kinds of train vehicles, from trams to very high speed
trains.

Together with the mentioned contract, ALSTOM also signed a
Cooperation Agreement for future development. A major part of
this agreement is the study of possible manufacture transfer of
future orders to the Russian Federation.
