The works, commencing on April 1
st , 2002, and stretching over a 7-year period,
encompass preventative and corrective maintenance and overhaul
works. In order to facilitate the significant project, ALSTOM
will take over the Hutt Workshops in Wellington.

This contract represents a major step forward in the
enhancement of the efficiency and reliability of rail services in
New Zealand and is expected to drive a three-fold reduction in
locomotive failures. As a result of outsourcing, Tranz Rail is
expecting substantial savings.

Tranz Rail has also welcomed the injection of ALSTOM
technology, quality and service, which will bring significant
benefits to Tranz Rail and its customers. Under the new
outsourcing contract, current Tranz Rail staff will have the
opportunity to broaden their skills and build a secure long-term
future as part of a strong business.

ALSTOMs track record in New Zealand to date through its
work on large infrastructure servicing contracts covering fields
such as power generation, electricity transmission and
distribution and telecommunications was an important factor in
the award of the contract.
