The works, commencing on April 1
st , 2002, and stretching over a 7-year period,
encompass preventative and corrective maintenance and overhaul
works. In order to facilitate the significant project, ALSTOM
will take over the Hutt Workshops in Wellington.

This contract represents a major step forward in the
enhancement of the efficiency and reliability of rail services in
New Zealand and is expected to drive a three-fold reduction in
locomotive failures. As a result of outsourcing, Tranz Rail is
expecting substantial savings.

Tranz Rail has also welcomed the injection of ALSTOM
technology, quality and service, which will bring significant
benefits to Tranz Rail and its customers. Under the new
outsourcing contract, current Tranz Rail staff will have the
opportunity to broaden their skills and build a secure long-term
future as part of a strong business.

ALSTOMs track record in New Zealand to date through its
work on large infrastructure servicing contracts covering fields
such as power generation, electricity transmission and
distribution and telecommunications was an important factor in
the award of the contract.

ALSTOM is the global leader in the provision of complete rail
solutions ranging from new rollingstock to total asset management
and maintenance. Mr Michel Moreau, ALSTOM Transport Sector
President, commented that, 'This new contract follows
ALSTOMs determination to grow its transport business in
Australia and New Zealand on the back of its success with Connex
in Melbourne.'

In Melbourne, Australia, ALSTOM has a 15-year A$1.4 billion
contract to provide rollingstock and asset management services to
Connexs suburban network, including the refurbishment of
270 existing rail cars as well as associated rail infrastructure
works.

Tranz Rail is a publically listed company that took over the
privatised New Zealand railroads in the mid 1990s. It has
a long-term lease of the tracks, which in narrow gauged and
extends over 5000 kilometres.

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in over 60
countries, ALSTOM Transport offers cutting-edge products and
services to four distinct types of customers: urban transit
authorities and operators; intercity passenger rail operators
and rolling stock owners; rail freight operators; and intercity
railway infrastructure owners. Maintenance is a mainstay of
ALSTOMs services for all types of trains. ALSTOM
Transport, with 4.4 billion euros in sales, has a 17% market
share world-wide.
