Service began on Shanghai’s Xinmin line on November 25,
2003 with four ALSTOM-designed
METROPOLIS
trainsets (three in operation, one available for backup).

ALSTOM and Shanghai ALSTOM Transport Co. (SATCO) will build a
total of 68 cars for the Xinmin line. SATCO is a joint venture
between ALSTOM and Shanghai Electric Corp.

In addition to the cars for the Xinmin Line, ALSTOM and SATCO
are also building METROPOLIS trains for the city’s future
Yangpu Line. METROPOLIS trains built by ALSTOM and Nanjing Puzhen
Rolling Stock Works have been in service on the Pearl Line
(Line 3) since November 2002, and ALSTOM is supplying its
URBALIS 200 signaling and train-control information solution for
this line.

In total, Shanghai has ordered 488 METROPOLIS cars for its
metro lines.

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in more than
60 countries, ALSTOM's Transport sector offers complete
products and services for new rolling stock, signaling and
electrical and mecanical infrastructure as well as maintenance
and rehabilitation services to four distinct types of
customers: urban transit authorities and operators; intercity
passenger rail operators and rolling stock owners; rail freight
operators; and intercity railway infrastructure owners.
ALSTOM's Transport sector, with sales of
€5.1 billion in financial year 2002-2003, is among
the world's leading suppliers to the railway industry.
