High desert wins power plant of the year

The High Desert Power Plant in California has recently won Power Magazine’s 2003 Power Plant of the Year award. Constellation Energy’s High Desert Power Plant is the first major plant installed in Southern California in a decade and has played a major role in the area’s economic redevelopment plans.

ALSTOM’s Heat Recovery and Plants unit in Windsor, US supplied 3 HRSGs for this project. The HRSGs are top-supported, modular OCCTM design units behind Siemens 501F gas turbines. The pressure parts for the HRSGs were manufactured in ALSTOM’s facility in Surabaya, Indonesia, with Windsor providing the engineering and project management.

The 830 MW plant, which entered commercial operation on 22 April 2003, is a natural gas combined-cycle facility, which produces enough electricity to serve over 500,000 households. The plant’s three gas turbines burn clean natural gas. The plant has been designed to use one-third less fuel and produces significantly reduced air emissions compared with other power plants in the Los Angeles Basin.

Constellation Energy Group, a Fortune 500 company that owns a regulated utility named Baltimore Gas & Electric that provides electricity and gas to retail customers in Maryland, US and also owns over 12.3 GW of generation capacity across the US.
