Alstom to supply Melbourne with 20 additional
XTrapolis suburban trains

This order is part of an option under a
contract signed in January 2008 for the delivery of 18
XTrapolis trainsets. Following the exercise of this
option, the number of trains to be delivered to the State of
Victoria has increased to 38 six-coach trainsets. The delivery of
the new trains is set to begin in the last quarter of 2010. These
six-car trainsets will be added to the existing City of Melbourne
fleet, where 58 three-coach XTrapolis trainsets produced
by Alstom have already been in operation since 2002.

The XTrapolis suburban trains operating
on Melbournes network offer exceptional capacity (up to
30,000 passengers an hour in each direction) and three doors per
car to facilitate passenger flows during peak schedules. Wide
intercarriage access also enhances movement within the trains,
which are equipped with air-conditioning, priority seating for
the elderly, and easy access for wheelchair users.
XTrapolis trains provide users with greater visibility and
space, giving additional comfort and the feeling of security. The
new trains will further benefit from a modernised passenger
information system (automatic announcement of stations) and
security cameras.

This new contract underlines the trust placed
in Alstoms products by the State of Victoria. It also
enables Alstom to strengthen its presence in Australia. Alstom
has also supplied Melbourne with 36 Citadis trams, which have
been in service since 2001.
