Contract worth close to 80 million (approx. INR 530 crore/ USD 100 million)

Alstom has been awarded a contract worth approx. 80 million (approx. INR 530 crore/ USD 100 million) by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), to supply components and services for the 660 MW supercritical boilers at NTPC sites of two units located in Mouda, Maharashtra, India. These 660 MW supercritical power boilers were  awarded to BHEL as part of the NTPC Bulk 660 MW tender. Alstom is the licensor of the supercritical technology of BHEL and is also collaborating with BHEL on execution of the supercritical boiler projects under the Licence and Business Cooperation Agreements.

Under the scope of the contract, Alstom will cooperate with BHEL in designing the boilers and supply pressure parts of the 660 MW supercritical boilers along with pulverisers and airpreheater components. It will also assist BHEL with technical advisors during the erection and commissioning of the units. Key components will be manufactured from Alstoms manufacturing facilities in Wellsville and Concordia in the USA and in Durgapur and Shahabad, India The units are expected to be commissioned in 2016.

Francois Carpentier, Vice President, Thermal and Renewable Power, Alstom India, said, With this contract, Alstom has reinforced its position as a leader in supercritical boiler technology and through our partnership with BHEL, we are proud to be offering our efficient solutions to support Indias quest for clean energy.

The new Mouda contract is a confirmation of the strong business and technology cooperation established since 2005 with BHEL, and comes in addition to five contracts signed with BHEL between 2008 to 2011 for supercritical boilers of 660MW, 700MW and 800MW in Barh II, Krishnapatnam, Bara, Yeramarus and Bellary in India.

Alstoms supercritical coal-fired boilers are state-of-the-art technology and designed to address the challenges of the power industry in India in order to achieve increased efficiency, reduced emissions and high availability. The state-of-the-art boiler design incorporates the most advanced tangential firing system with a new overfire air configuration for improved firing system to enhance boiler performance. In addition to this, the supercritical boiler technology also helps in achieving about 3-4% higher plant efficiency compared to conventional subcritical design.

Supercritical technology is the most adapted to address Indias challenges for Clean Coal power generation additions. 60% of XIIth plan and 90% of XIIIth plan additions will be based on supercritical technology which marks the commitment of Government of India in balancing infrastructure development and care for environment. The Bulk projects concluded this year are  the biggest ever initiated by the Indian government and will support the rapid growth of the countrys economy while providing efficient and environmentally conscious solutions. Alstom is playing a key role with BHEL in these NTPC projects. Alstom is also supplying the steam turbine generator for the Solapur project and the control systems for the Mouda and Solapur projects under separate orders signed earlier this year.
