In November 2012, the Alstom Foundation adopted a sustainable waterfall programme in Malaysia for a period of two years. Waste disposal in tourist sites such as these waterfalls remains a challenge in Malaysia. The Sustainable Waterfall Adoption Programme aims at raising public awareness about nature preservation and respect of the environment.

Under this corporate social responsibility project, the Alstom Foundation is supporting a NGO, Pertubuhan Pencinta Air Terjun Selangor (PPATS), in its conservation activities for two waterfalls, namely Sungai Liam Waterfalls in Hulu Yam, Selangor and Batu Berangkai Waterfalls in Kampar, Perak, both located close to Alstom sites. Fortnightly, volunteers from Alstom as well as young Malaysians from upper primary to university level will clean up the waterfall areas to keep them pristine and litter-free as well as to encourage tourists to respect and care for the environment through workshops and campaigns.

Head of Alstom Foundation, Dominique Jaoul, who was present for the official launch on 23 January 2013 at Sungai Liam Waterfall said, With this Sustainable Waterfall Adoption Programme, we are continuing the Alstom Foundations objectives in Malaysia. For the past five years, the Alstom Foundation has funded the Rainforest-to-Reef Programme with Reef Check Malaysia, through environmental awareness activities for school children in selected island schools (Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Redang, Pulau Tioman and Pulau Pangkor). We believe we have successfully supported Reef Check Malaysia in educating the target population. Today, we progress to waterfalls which are an important source of drinking water for local communities. Both these programmes align with Alstoms environmental sustainability principles.

Saji Raghavan, Alstom Country President for Malaysia added: By targeting young Malaysians we seek to build the foundations of environmental sustainability for the future and through our Alstom employees, the importance of corporate social responsibility.

Alstom is currently undertaking several projects and carrying out after-sales services for customers in the fields of thermal and renewable power generation, power grid enhancement as well as rail transport. For more than 40 years, Alstom has played an active role in supporting Malaysias rapid infrastructure development. The 900 Alstom employees in Malaysia not only serve the country but also the Asia Pacific region.
