  • The 100% electric Tzen 4 bus, fully financed by Île-de-France Mobilités and designed for Île-de-France Mobilités by the Van Hool – Kiepe Electric – Alstom consortium, has made its first voyage at the Bus Operations Centre in Corbeil-Essonnes, Île-de-France

  • Alstom is demonstrating its static ground charging solution (SRS) for electric buses

  • Alstom’s innovative SRS technology is helping to provide passengers with more comfortable, efficient and environmentally-friendly journeys

15 March 2024 Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, is supplying the static ground charging system (SRS) for the Tzen 4 bus, the first double-articulated, ground-recharged 100% electric bus, 100% financed by Île-de-France Mobilités.

This bus will eventually equip the Tzen 4 line, between Viry-Châtillon and Corbeil-Essonnes RER station, as well as the new Tzen 5 bus line, between the 13th arrondissement of Paris and Choisy-le-Roi.

“For more than 20 years now, Alstom has been developing and deploying catenary-free static and dynamic ground charging solutions. Today, I am delighted with this world première: the first circulation of the Tzen 4 bus, 100% electric, bi-articulated and recharged on the ground thanks to our proven and innovative SRS system,”

Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud
President of Alstom France

This innovative and sustainable transport solution from the Van Hool – Kiepe Electric – Alstom consortium is made up of 24-metre-long, bi-articulated Van Hool electric buses powered by Kiepe Electric’s high-power, fast-charging battery systems that will be charged by Alstom’s SRS system.

“For more than 20 years now, Alstom has been developing and deploying catenary-free static and dynamic ground charging solutions (APS for trams and SRS for trams and electric buses). These solutions are used in a dozen cities around the world. Trams equipped with APS have already covered more than 70 million kilometres. Today, I am delighted with this world première: the first circulation of the Tzen 4 bus, 100% electric, bi-articulated and recharged on the ground thanks to our proven and innovative SRS system,” said Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud, President of Alstom France.

An innovative solution

Alstom’s SRS solution for electric buses offers numerous advantages to cities and bus operators alike. SRS is a safe, ground-contact static charging system that recharges on-board equipment automatically, at very high power and in just a few minutes. Charging can be conducted either on a bus line during operation or in a depot when the vehicle is not in service.

Thanks to its positioning on the ground, Alstom’s SRS solution does not require overhead infrastructure and blends naturally into the urban landscape. SRS is a highly reliable and modular system that is designed to be interoperable and compatible with all types of electric buses. This means it can be deployed across multiple fleets, regardless of the manufacturer or variations in battery technology.

A future-proof technology

Alstom’s SRS solution is a technology of the future. Many cities have set themselves increasingly ambitious decarbonisation targets, and electric buses are playing a key role in these roadmaps.

For the development and deployment of the SRS solution for electric buses on the Tzen 4 and Tzen 5 lines in the Île-de-France region, Alstom is relying in particular on the excellence of:

  • the teams at Vitrolles site (Alstom’s global development centre for underfloor power supply solutions), to design the product,
  • and the Infrastructure & Systems teams, in charge of engineering, installation and tests.
