4 May 2025 – Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, presented today, together with STA - Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige SpA - the first of 21 Coradia Stream trains that will make up the new regional fleet connecting South Tyrol and Tyrol. The presentation took place at Malles Venosta station (BZ), as part of the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the Val Venosta railway, marking a significant milestone in enhancing cross-border mobility with Austria on key routes such as Malles–Lienz and Innsbruck–Bolzano.
The event was held in the presence of the President of the Autonomous Province of Bozen/Bolzano, Arno Kompatscher, the Provincial Councillor for Mobility, Daniel Alfreider, the Councillor for Mobility of the State of Tyrol, Renè Zumtobel, the President of the District Community, Roselinde Gunsch Koch, the General Director of STA, Joachim Dejaco and the Managing Director Alstom in Italy, Michele Viale.
"With over 600 Coradia Stream trains designed, built, and put into commercial service by Alstom in Italy, the unveiling of the first regional train for STA marks a significant upgrade in connectivity between South Tyrol in Italy and Tyrol in Austria, and a further step forward for the national mobility system."
Manufactured at Alstom’s Savigliano site (CN), the trains can reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h and measure 127.9 metres in length, offering 381 seats. The new Coradia Stream trains are also equipped with the ERTMS signalling system, enabling interoperability across international borders.

"Today, for the first time, a Coradia Stream electric multiple train can be seen on South Tyrolean soil. Starting in mid-2026, these multi-unit trains will not only be in use in the Vinschgau Valley, but throughout the province," says Daniel Alfreider, provincial councillor for Mobility Autonomous Province of Bolzano-South Tyrol. "The new multi-unit electric trains have continuous power of about 3,000 kilowatts at the wheels and reach a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour. The train offers 381 seats and thus carries up to 200 percent more passengers per trip than previous trains. There is also an expanded bicycle compartment."
The train interiors have been designed with the community in mind, featuring large spaces for bicycle transport and fully accessible areas for passengers with reduced mobility. Accessibility is a key feature of these new trains: a high number of doors ensures faster and smoother boarding and disembarking, while the areas dedicated to passengers with reduced mobility – accessible via adjustable ramps – include two wheelchair spaces with power sockets. Two onboard toilets, one of which is PRM-compliant, guarantee autonomy and comfort throughout the journey.
The new regional trains will enter commercial service in 2026, following the completion of validation and certification testing.
The Savigliano site is Alstom’s centre of excellence for both the single-deck Coradia Stream regional train (over 600 sold to date in Italy alone) and Avelia high-speed trains (over 500 sold worldwide). It represents a model example of Industry 4.0, the result of major investments in recent years in both digitalisation and automation. The facility features a virtual reality room – a 3D environment in which trains are developed in co-operation with both other centres of excellence and key suppliers – and also the TrainLab, a simulation environment that replicates the electrical and functional systems of the real train, allowing for early validation of solutions and their performance before full-scale production.
