Dovetail Games to bring Train Sim World to Alstom’s The Greatest Gathering

3 June 2025 – British video game developer Dovetail Games have announced their attendance at Alstom’s The Greatest Gathering – the UK’s largest temporary gathering of trains and rail-related exhibits in a generation.

The event takes place between Friday 1 and Sunday 3 August as part of this year’s Railway 200 celebrations.

This three-day, sold-out festival at Alstom’s Derby Litchurch Lane Works will feature more than 50 iconic vehicles from the past, present and future of the railways, and marks the first time in almost 50 years that the rolling stock factory has been open to the general public.

“It’s a pleasure to welcome Dovetail Games to Litchurch Lane for The Greatest Gathering. Their presence in the STEM Hub brings a dynamic, interactive dimension to the event – one that perfectly complements our mission to delight railfans and inspire the next generation of railway innovators.”

Dovetail Games will be appearaing in the event’s STEM Hub with two booths hosting their flagship series Train Sim World for members of the public to enjoy. This space is designed to be both immersive and interactive, with a focus on inspiring the next generation of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) leaders – by showcasing the breadth of disciplines that power the railway industry.

“It’s a pleasure to welcome Dovetail Games to Litchurch Lane for The Greatest Gathering. Their presence in the STEM Hub brings a dynamic, interactive dimension to the event – one that perfectly complements our mission to delight railfans and inspire the next generation of railway innovators,” said Andy Butters, Managing Director of Derby Litchurch Lane Works at Alstom.

He added: “As the UK’s only end-to-end train manufacturing site, it’s a privilege to open our doors and showcase the future of rail alongside such passionate partners.”

Train Sim World gives players the chance to drive locomotives from across the world at home, via PC, Xbox and PlayStation. The current title, Train Sim World 5, features the Avanti West Coast Class 390 Pendolino – built by Alstom and one of the trains attending The Greatest Gathering. Additional content for the series features Derby Litchurch Lane Works, LMS Jubliee locomotives and the iconic HST, also attending.

“We’re thrilled to be taking part in this once-in-a-generation railway event and sharing the passion, history and love for trains with visitors through our world-leading simulation title,” said Matt Peddlesden, Executive Producer at Dovetail Games.

Two consoles will be available to play at the stand and keen visitors will also be able to play using a converted professional train driver training simulator with a Class 700-style control desk and real train controls. Additional independent simulators will be at the event utilising Dovetail Games software.

To celebrate their involvement, Dovetail Games have created a line-up of train classes expected at the real-world event – as they appear in the video game – which will be playable at the developer’s stand. These include a Class 350, a Derby-built Class 142 Pacer, a Class 43 HST, a Class 87, a Class 52 Western, an LMS Jubilee Class, a Class 33, a Class 323 and an Alstom-built Class 390 Pendolino.
