The trains are manufactured at Alstom’s facility in Santa Perpétua, Barcelona, and are part of a comprehensive strategy to modernise and expand the mass transit network in the Dominican capital.

“The delivery of the first trains for the extension of Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro is a key milestone for Alstom and for urban mobility in the country. This project reflects our long-term commitment to the Dominican Republic and to the development of modern, safe, and sustainable transportation solutions, in close collaboration with OPRET,” said Maite Ramos, Managing Director of Alstom for North Latin America.

“The addition of these new trains represents a concrete step forward for urban mobility in Santo Domingo. This project reflects the joint work between OPRET and Alstom, with the goal of offering an increasingly efficient, safe, and reliable system, keeping pace with growing demand and improving the daily experience of metro users,” commented Jhael Isa, Director of OPRET.

The trains are shipped from Spain to the Dominican Republic as three individual cars each. When they arrive, the cars are linked together and undergo final inspections before delivery. Following delivery, the trains will be integrated into the system including final testing inside the Santo Domingo Metro environment.

Alstom is preparing the remaining trains and expects a continuous flow of deliveries over the coming months.

Start of pre-operational testing

The trains delivered today will now be integrated into the Santo Domingo Metro and including robust testing on the network prior to their entry into commercial service.

During this phase OPRET will validate key systems  in real-world operating conditions, notably the introduction of a new generation of braking systems. This work complements the tests Alstom previously carried out at our factory.

Increased capacity and improved travel experience

These new Metropolis trains provide better amenities for passengers and train operations  including:

  • Wider doors to facilitate passenger flow

  • Open gangways allowing full inter-car circulation

  • Advanced passenger information systems

  • High-efficiency LED lighting

  • Driver’s cabs equipped with state-of-the-art technology

In addition, the trains can operate in multiple-unit configuration, allowing system capacity to be increased in line with demand. Alstom is currently working to strengthen operational compatibility between different train series, with the aim of optimizing commercial operations.

Boosting urban mobility

The extension of Line 2C, which will connect the María Montez station with Los Alcarrizos, represents a key step forward in improving mobility in Santo Domingo, benefiting more than 14 communities by facilitating transportation, reducing travel times and the easing of congestion on major roadways.

With this delivery, Alstom reaffirms its role as a strategic partner in the development of the Santo Domingo Metro, where it has been involved since its inception, contributing to the strengthening of a modern, safe, and sustainable transportation system.
