Alstom’s industrial site in Bizkaia receives Brain-Protected Space Certification

  • The certification, awarded by Fundación Freno al Ictus, reinforces Alstom’s commitment to the health, prevention and safety of its employees.

  • Stroke affects more than 120,000 people in Spain every year, and one in four people will experience a stroke during their lifetime.

Bilbao, 2 July 2026 – Alstom’s industrial site in Trápaga, Bizkaia, which specialises in the manufacture of traction equipment for all types of rolling stock solutions, has been awarded the Brain-Protected Space Certification by Fundación Freno al Ictus, further strengthening its commitment to the health and wellbeing of its workforce.

This accreditation recognises that the organisation’s employees have completed specific online training designed to help them identify the warning signs of a stroke and understand how to respond in the event of a medical emergency. Recognising symptoms quickly and immediately alerting the emergency services are critical factors in improving patient outcomes.

"This certification demonstrates that, in Trápaga, we aim not only to be an industrial benchmark, but also an environment that is prepared to protect the health of our teams."

“At Alstom, we are firmly committed to providing safe and healthy workplaces. This certification demonstrates that, in Trápaga, we aim not only to be an industrial benchmark, but also an environment that is prepared to protect the health of our teams,” said Iñaki Rojo, General Manager of Alstom’s Trápaga site.

For his part, Julio Agredano, President of Fundación Freno al Ictus, highlighted that “stroke can affect one in four people during their lifetime, and rapid intervention is crucial to reducing mortality rates and minimising long-term effects. Every trained employee represents a new opportunity to recognise symptoms in time and activate the appropriate response.”

Stroke affects more than 120,000 people in Spain each year. It is the leading cause of acquired disability in adults, the leading cause of death among women, and the second leading cause of death overall in the country. It is also estimated that one in four people will suffer a stroke during their lifetime, although up to 90% of cases could be prevented through effective risk-factor management and the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits.

This certification strengthens and continues Alstom Spain’s commitment to stroke prevention, awareness and response. Collaboration between the two organisations began in 2019 with the launch of the “Alstom Against Stroke” campaign and has since been consolidated through a range of awareness-raising and training initiatives.

As part of this commitment, several Alstom sites have already been certified as Brain-Protected Spaces. With the addition of the Trápaga facility, the company further expands this network of workplaces dedicated to the early detection of stroke and the promotion of a rapid and appropriate response to this medical emergency.

The Brain-Protected Space Certification is awarded following completion of an online training programme developed by the Stop Stroke Foundation in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) through its Study Group on Cerebrovascular Diseases (GEECV). This initiative forms part of the Brain Caring People project, which is endorsed by the scientific society and supported by the Spanish Association of Occupational Medicine Specialists (AEEMT) and the Spanish Association of Occupational Health and Safety Services (AESPLA).
