Smarter trams for safer systems: Alstom’s driver assistance solutions

Picture a tram navigating the heart of a lively city. Pedestrians appear without warning, cars dart through traffic, and cyclists share the same narrow space. For tram drivers, every moment matters. In this dynamic environment, safety isn’t just a priority - it’s a commitment.

As cities grow, so does the need for reliable, secure public transport. Yet shared spaces come with challenges: sudden obstacles, sharp curves and heavy pedestrian flow. Traditional safety measures can only go so far. Operators need intelligent, proactive support to ensure every journey is smooth, safe, and predictable.

That’s where Alstom’s ODAS™ (Obstacle Detection Assistance System) and COMPAS™ (Collision Prevention Assistance System) systems come in. These advanced driver-assistance technologies act like an extra set of eyes and reflexes for tram drivers, helping prevent accidents before they happen.

What are ODAS and COMPAS?

Introduced in 2017, ODAS by Alstom, was the world’s first homologated obstacle detection system for trams. Using stereo vision cameras and predictive mapping, ODAS continuously scans the tracks ahead, detecting hazards like pedestrians, vehicles, or debris. If danger looms, it alerts the driver and if necessary, applies a gentle brake to avoid collisions. The driver stays in control, but now with a guardian angel watching over every move.

Building on ODAS, COMPAS as further enhanced solution adds another layer of protection: overspeed prevention. It knows the tram’s location and track geometry, ensuring safe speeds through curves and complex sections. Together, ODAS and COMPAS create a comprehensive safety net that prevents derailments, rear-end collisions, and accidents in the busiest urban environments.

Future-ready by design, these systems can retrofit existing fleets or equip new builds, fitting any light rail vehicle, not just Alstom trams. Alstom’s vision is clear: smarter trams that think ahead. By empowering drivers, ODAS and COMPAS make every journey safer without compromising comfort. As cities strive for zero accidents, these solutions are setting the standard for intelligent urban mobility.
