ALSTOM wins car paint-shop contract in Brazil

ALSTOM, through its subsidiary ALSTOM Automation Painting
Systems, has won a 43 million euro turnkey order to supply the
paint-shop for Peugeot Citroëns new Brazilian car
plant, located in Porto Real in the State of Rio de
Janeiro.

ALSTOM will be responsible for all aspects of the
paint-shops design, manufacture and installation. The
facility will meet strict environmental standards through the
extensive use of water-based paints and will benefit from a
high level of automation, including robots and automatic spray
machines.

ALSTOMs technological expertise in paint-shop
automation coupled with its strong presence in Brazil, which
will enable it to respect the orders 60% local content
requirements, were essential criteria for Peugeot-Citroën
in the award of the contract. Brazilian suppliers will be
involved extensively in the supply of equipment for the
paint-shop as well as in its manufacture and construction.

The car plant is due to enter service in December 2000 and
will have the capacity to produce up to 125,000 vehicles per
year.

This order from Peugeot-Citroën is the biggest
paintshop contract placed by a car manufacturer in South
America in the last 12 months. It follows an important turnkey
project for General Motors Brazil, and establishes ALSTOM as
the major automotive paint finishing supplier in the
region.
