ALSTOM, through its Transmission & Distribution sector,
has just signed a Memorandum of Understanding with BG
Technology, the independent research and development arm of BG
(British Gas) plc. The focus of the agreement is to help
commercialise Polymer Fuel Cell* (PEM) technology in stationary
power generation systems, within the UK and some of the 18
other countries where BG has established a major presence.

The agreement comes as the result of negotiations between
the two companies, which have a natural synergy in gas
energy.

· ALSTOM is currently in the process of developing
power generation plants based on PEM fuel cell technology built
by Ballard Generation Systems, a subsidiary of Ballard Power
Systems Inc., the acknowledged world leader in this field.

· BG has built up considerable skill and expertise
right across the gas chain 'from drill bit to burner tip' and
has particular expertise in the testing and development of fuel
cell systems.

According to the main terms of the agreement, ALSTOM and BG
will also cooperate to develop an optimum gas processing system
for the PEM stationary power plant.

According to Dr. Henry Stroud, Business Director of BG plc,
'Our agreement with ALSTOM highlights the value that other
companies put in our experience and expertise in energy
technology. The agreement will see two leaders in the sector
combine their different strengths in technological development
and market presence to develop natural gas processing systems.
Not only will this lead to greater commercial opportunities for
BG and ALSTOM, but ultimately it will also provide consumers
with the option of a more efficient and environmentally
sensitive energy supply.'
