The Administration of Switzerland's Vaud Canton has just
chosen ALSTOM to supply the train control system for the
Lausanne metro, for approximately 27 million euros. It has also
confirmed the choice of ALSTOM to supply the rolling stock,
comprising 15 two-car trainsets, for a total of 56 million
euros.

This new rubber-tyred metro, which will link Ouchy, in the
south of Lausanne, to the district of Epalinges in the north,
is due to enter commercial operation in 2005.

The train control system proposed by ALSTOM for the Lausanne
metro, Urbalis, is a system with a strong potential for
evolution, which can be operated at different levels of
automation. In its most advanced version, the metro system can
be fully automated, allowing trains to run automatically
without drivers. The Administration of Switzerland's Vaud
Canton will decide on the chosen version after a complete
analysis of the different aspects of the project.

In order to offer the travellers a complete service as soon
as the metro is operational, the administration has chosen to
implement this project in one phase, instead of the two
initially planned.

ALSTOM is the world's leading supplier to the railway
industry. The Company has developed its expertise and
capabilities in sophisticated automatic and driverless mass
transit systems. ALSTOM's know-how in heavy mass transit
rolling stock and signaling is unmatched - with metros in
operation daily in more than 50 cities around the world.
Rubber-tyred metros are in operation in Paris - most recently
on the new Meteor line - and also in Santiago, Chile, where
they have been in operation for several decades. ALSTOM has
built some 3200 rubber-tyred metros which are presently in
service around the world.
