ALSTOM has been awarded a contract worth about 50 million
euros for the supply of a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)
interconnector to POWERGRID - India's national power
transmission company. The interconnection, which is to be built
at Sasaram in Bihar state, will allow the exchange of energy
between the Eastern and Northern regional electricity
Networks.

The sharing of energy resources is essential for the
development of India's national electricity grid. This latest
turnkey project will be particularly beneficial because the
Eastern region has an energy surplus and the Northern region
has a deficit.

The new 500 MW interconnector at Sasaram will allow
controllable amounts of energy to be exchanged between
electricity networks without the need for synchronising
frequency, phase or voltage. Construction of the interconnector
starts immediately and is due to be completed in September
2002.

ALSTOM's T&D sector is a world leader in HVDC technology
and has previously supplied two other interconnectors to
POWERGRID at Chandrapur, in Maharastra and Visakhapatnam in
Andhra Pradesh.

ALSTOM is organised in six Sectors: Energy, Transmission
& Distribution, Transport, Power Conversion, Marine and
Contracting, all of these being supported by the ALSTOM
Network.

ALSTOM offers a complete range of systems, components and
services covering design and manufacture as well as
commissioning and long-term maintenance and has unique
expertise in systems integration and management of turnkey
projects.
