Rotterdamse Elektrische Tram (RET), the Dutch citys
transportation authority, has chosen ALSTOM to supply 60 new
tramcars in a contract valued at 82 million euros. The new
trams are destined for the three 'Tram-Plus' lines, which serve
suburban areas not covered by the citys underground.

ALSTOM will supply its full low floor unidirectional
CITADIS tram, featuring four double doors on one side of
each vehicle. The new cars will be used to extend the
networks service as well as to modernise the image of
Rotterdam's tramway system. The city has a long tradition of
tramways. In 1905, its first line operated with a fleet of 10
cars. Today, RET operates up to 120 trams.

The new fleet of trams is due to go into passenger service
on the extended lines in 2003, and will offer passengers
reduced travel times, a frequent time-table and a comfortable
modern vehicle. Passenger capacity will be 190 passengers per
vehicle.

ALSTOM, through TRAXIS, a Dutch company acquired in April
2000, has a long-standing relationship with RET for the supply
of traction equipment. This experience was cited as a decisive
factor in the award of this contract.

First deliveries are scheduled for July 2002 and will
continue at a rate of one trainset per week through completion
of the order 18 months later.
