ALSTOM's 51% subsidiary GT Railway Maintenance (GTRM), has
been awarded a series of multi-year contracts totalling 580
million euros by Railtrack, the company responsible for UK
mainline railway infrastructure since privatisation. GTRM is
owned jointly by ALSTOM and Carillion plc (49%).

The most significant contract was awarded for the
maintenance of the 418-mile southern section of West Coast Main
Line infrastructure over a 5-year period. In addition, GTRM has
secured related contracts in other parts of the Railtrack
network including the mid-Wales, Gloucester and Preston
regions. The scope of the contracts includes civil works,
tracks, overhead lines, power supply and signaling.

Michel Moreau, President of ALSTOM's Transport sector,
congratulated the GTRM team 'These awards reflect the
professionalism that GTRM has brought to the task of
maintaining a substantial portion of the Railtrack network in
recent years. GTRM has consistently out-performed all other
companies in meeting the performance criteria laid down by
Railtrack. The success of GTRM is a cornerstone of ALSTOM's
strategy to develop its service capability on a global
basis.'

GT Railway Maintenance (GTRM) was created in April 1996 when
it was purchased from the British Railways Board. With an
annual turnover in excess of 350 million euros, GTRM is a
dominant player in the railway infrastructure maintenance
sector, employing almost 3,500 people throughout the United
Kingdom.

GTRM is responsible for the maintenance and repair work of
around 21% of the UK mainline railway network. The company is
also involved in major railway enhancement projects and is
currently undertaking the modernisation of the overhead
catenary along the West Coast Main Line in joint venture with
Balfour Beatty.
