ALSTOM awarded major railcars order from French national
railways

The French National Railways Company (SNCF) has just
notified ALSTOM of its decision to order 100 new TER (Regional
Express Transport) railcars for a total value of 137 million
euros. This order comes within the framework of an investment
programme to be carried out over several years and financed by
regional authorities.

The railcars, which will have a capacity of 81 seated
passengers per car and operate at a maximum speed of 140 km/h,
will satisfy the increasing passenger traffic and renew part of
the rail fleet serving the regions of France. Some of them will
be produced in a cross-border version, especially equipped to
enable them to operate on lines entering Germany.

The railcars are to be built in Reichshoffen in the Alsace
region of France, between June 2002 and September 2003. Since
1997, SNCF has ordered 300 units of this type from ALSTOM - The
100th was delivered in May 2001.
