This order comprises:

  • A firm order for 180 locomotives, confirming an option of
an earlier order (the firm portion of the earlier order was for
120 units; they are currently being
    manufactured)
  • A second firm order for 120 bi-current electric
    locomotives(1.5kV and 25kV) type BB 427 000, and on option, 80
    electric locomotives of which 50 bi-current (1.5kV and 25kV),
    type BB 427 000, and 30 tri-tension (25kV, 1.5 kV and 3
    kV).

The total value of this order is 737 million euros, of which
582 million euros for the firm orders entered in the order book.
These PRIMA locomotives will be assembled in ALSTOM's facility in
Belfort, eastern France. Delivery of the first 180 units will
begin in late 2002. The other 120 locomotives will be delivered
between 2005 and 2007 at an average rate of 8 per month.

With the completion of this order, the SNCF will operate a
total of 500 PRIMA locomotives.

The new order comes within the framework of the SNCF fleet
renovation program for acquiring 604 freight locomotives (480
electric and 124 diesel), approved by France’s CIES
(Committee for social and economic investments) in July 2001.

This order represents a further success for the PRIMA
locomotive range. PRIMA locomotives are already in service in
Israel, Sri Lanka, Syria and France, and in production for
customers in Iran and Spain. ALSTOM was also recently awarded an
order for 33 PRIMA locomotives, plus an optional 5, by the New
Jersey Transit Corp. in the US.

ALSTOM electric locomotives offer freight operators high
levels of reliability and availability, combined with low
operating costs and zero emissions.

    control systems
  • Acquisition and maintenance costs are significantly
    reduced
