The globally recognized Capability Maturity Models were
developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), a research
and development center operated by Carnegie Mellon University.
The SEI was established to advance the practice of software
engineering towards quality software that is produced on schedule
and within budget to global standards.

The assessment affirms that ALSTOMs software
development capability and methodology conforms to world-class
standards of 'best practices.' It recognizes the excellence of
ALSTOMs software development work and the effectiveness of
its project management.

Michel Moreau, president of ALSTOMs Transport Sector,
says:
'ALSTOM has a global CMM plan and is committed to providing
its customers with high-quality, on-time and on-budget software
products. We are very proud of this successful achievement,
unique in the rail industry. It will allow us to increase the
efficiency of our systems integration among ALSTOMs global
offerings.'

The SW-CMM consists of five assessment levels. The achievement
at Meudon-la-Fôret is the highpoint of ALSTOMs
participation in CMM. ALSTOMs Villeurbanne, France,
facility has been assessed at level three. ALSTOM facilities
assessed at level two include Rochester, New York;
SaintOuen, France; Charleroi, Belgium; Montreal and Sao
Paulo.

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in over 60
countries, ALSTOM's Transport Sector offers cutting-edge products
and services to four distinct types of customers: urban transit
authorities and operators; intercity passenger rail operators and
rolling stock owners; rail freight operators; and intercity
railway infrastructure owners. ALSTOM's Transport Sector, with
4.4 billion euros in sales in 2001, is among the world's leading
suppliers to the railway industry.
