First Bordeaux CITADIS tramway presented to the public

Didier Genty, Senior Vice President of ALSTOM Transport France, gave Alain Juppé a key to the tram during a symbolic ' handing over ' ceremony, in the Place Stalingrad, in front of the Stone bridge.

Didier Genty highlighted the strong partnership between the CUB and ALSTOM, and also the mutual determination to make this ambitious and technologically innovative project succeed. (70 tramsets and 45km of network by 2006)

The Bordeaux region is set to become a most significant showcase for urban transport in Europe and a model for tramway integration in an urban environment. This event is an important phase in the life of the project and the future passengers were able to see and visit their CITADIS Bordeaux on display over the whole weekend at the Jardin Botanique station.

The scope of this turnkey contract, won by ALSTOM in May 2000, consists of the supply of a total of 70 CITADIS tramsets the largest CITADIS tramway fleet in France, the trackwork, the tramway platform covering, the ground power supply and an option for the complete maintenance of all the equipment supplied.

As consortium leader, ALSTOM is responsible for project management, the interface with civil contractors and the co-ordination of the four subgroups.

The Bordeaux CITADIS tram fleet will consist of

  • 32 forty-metre full low floor tramsets as well as 6 thirty-metre full low floor tramsets, i.e. 38 tramsets for phase 1 ordered in 2000.
     
  • 6 forty-metre full low floor tramsets to complete phase 1 and cover the extension of the line up to Centre Hospitalier Régional (ordered in 2002)
     
  • 18 forty-metre full low floor tramsets and 8 thirty-metre full low floor tramsets, for the line extensions planned for phase 2, ordered in 2002.

To date, production is progressing as follows:

  • tramset 1 (40m) : 10 000 km of endurance tests have already been completed on ALSTOMs Bellevue test track, and now this tramset is being prepared for delivery  
  • tramsets 2 (this one was on display over the weekend) and 3 (30m) : presently in final commissioning in Bordeaux prior to delivery to the CUB  
  • tramsets 4 and 5 : presently in final commissioning in La Rochelle prior to delivery  
  • tramsets 6 to 15 : in production for final fittings and tests  
  • tramsets 15 to 20 : in production for underframes and panels

The delivery calendar is defined as follows:

2002: delivery of 11 tramsets
2003: delivery of 33 tramsets
2005: delivery of 12 tramsets
2006: delivery of 14 tramsets

Today CITADIS tramsets are in daily operation in Montpellier, Orléans, Lyon and Melbourne. To date 380 CITADIS tramsets have been ordered worldwide and are being manufactured for or in delivery to Dublin, Rotterdam, Paris, Valenciennes, Barcelona and Kassel.
