Porto Alegre’s subway, Trensurb, inaugurated a new
control center, supplied by ALSTOM, on November 28. The center
will supervise and control the operations of the 33.8 kilometers
and 17 stations of the line, which covers Porto Alegre, the
capital of Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state, as well as the
neighboring municipalities of Canoas, Esteio, Sapucaia do Sul and
São Leopoldo.

ALSTOM also established two new local control posts and
provided the signaling systems for them, as well as refurbishing
three other posts.

The new control systems will mean more constant intervals
between trains, thus fewer delays and less-crowded platforms.
With the upgrade, the Trensurb system can run 20 trains per hour
– which carry a total of 21,600 passengers – in both
directions.

The value of the contract for ALSTOM comes to approximately 4
million euros.

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in over 60
countries, ALSTOM's Transport Sector offers cutting-edge
products and services to four distinct types of customers:
urban transit authorities and operators; intercity passenger
rail operators and rolling stock owners; rail freight
operators; and intercity railway infrastructure owners.
ALSTOM's Transport Sector, with 4.4 billion euros in sales in
2001, is among the world's leading suppliers to the railway
industry.
