ALSTOM has just signed a contract with Votorantim Energia to provide operation and maintenance (O&M) services for the 160 MW Pedra do Cavalo Hydro Power Plant.  The power plant is located on the Paraguaçu River, in the State of Bahia.

The new plant will be part of the local integrated power supply system and is scheduled to enter commercial operation in October 2004. As the Pedra do Cavalo power plant will use water from the EMBASA (Empresa Bahiana de Água e Saneamento) dam, ALSTOM will also be in charge of controlling the dam's spillway, ensuring that the city of Salvador's water supply is not jeopardized and the downstream towns are protected from floods.

Inaugurated in 1985, the dam was mainly used to supply water to Salvador's metropolitan area and the municipality of Recôncavo, and to control the Paraguaçu river floods.  Since 1989, it has been operated by EMBASA and its operation will be transferred to ALSTOM by October 2004.

Already a market leader in Brazil's O&M market, ALSTOM is currently responsible for the operation and maintenance of over 1GW hydroelectric installed power capacity in the country. Previous O&M contracts include hydro power plants such as Barra Grande and Quebra-Queixo.
