ALSTOM has won a contract to design, manufacture and supply a new advanced cycle, high-efficiency 750 MW pulverised coal-fired boiler with extremely low NOx emissions in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The contract was awarded by Calaveras Power Partners for the J. K. Spruce 2 power plant, which is owned by CPS Energy.

Scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2010, the new unit is designed to burn low-sulphur Powder River Basin coal and is equipped with ALSTOMs highly successful TFS 2000® tangential firing system. This firing system, coupled with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, is expected to achieve the lowest NOx emissions of any coal-fired plant in the USA. The Spruce 2 boiler will operate at high-efficiency, advanced subcritical steam conditions, and will be located adjacent to the existing Spruce Unit 1 boiler, which ALSTOM supplied in 1988.

CPS Energy is the nation's largest municipally owned energy company providing both natural gas and electric service. CPS Energy is owned by the City of San Antonio and serves more than 600,000 electric customers and more than 300,000 natural gas customers.
