ALSTOM will refurbish the main equipment at the 100MW hydroelectric power plant, located on the river Nemunas in the city of Kaunas, 100km west of the capital, Vilnius. The scope of supply covers new turbine runners, hydro mechanical equipment, new electrical balance of plant including instrumentation and control equipment, as well as rehabilitation of the four 25 MW generators.
Design work is under way with site work scheduled to begin this autumn. The project is expected to be completed in 2008. Project management will be carried out from ALSTOMs unit in Sweden. ALSTOM is working with two local Lithuanian companies, which will carry out erection and civil works and some mechanical manufacturing.
Frederic Schneider-Maunoury, managing director of ALSTOMs Hydro business, said: We are seeing an upturn in hydroelectric rehabilitation projects in Europe as operators know that they can increase output considerably without a negative impact on the environment, and only at a fraction of the cost of building new plant. This is a market where ALSTOM has considerable experience and this contract confirms our commitment to this market.
