The competition was launched in March this year, with
Victoria university design and engineering undergraduate students
invited to design a futuristic CITADIS tram for Melbourne in the
year 2020. The winner is “Vista”, a project designed
by the Yokopano teams members Chris Chan, Casey Phau and Yuchen
Pan, industrial design students from Monash University. Featuring
gel seats for improved passenger comfort, radical on-board
information concepts and light projections for safer passenger
exit, “Vista” could be the future face of tram
travelling in Melbourne. Mr Batchelor presented the winning students. The 3 students
will fly to France next year to partake in a two-month internship
at ALSTOM Transport Headquarters Design Studio in Paris, mentored
by the internal design team. “Vista” was selected from 28 entries submitted
by industrial design and engineering undergraduate students from
Monash, RMIT and Swinburne University. Students were asked to
submit designs based on the structure of the existing CITADIS
tram operating on route 109, and capable of operating within
Melbourne’s existing tram network and infrastructure. Students also had to take into account Melbourne’s
future social needs as outlined in the Melbourne 2030 plan,
considering issues like environmental sustainability and improved
access for elderly and disabled travellers. Second place getters were students from Swinburne University
X-Posed tram with their X-Posed’design, winning $2,000.
Third place-getters were students from Monash University team
Chili Hazard with the ‘Movito’ design, winning
$1,000. The LightRail Towards 2020 judging panel comprised between
others Xavier Allard – ALSTOM Transport Design &
Styling Vice President and Christophe Gourlay – Customer
Director ALSTOM Transport Australia. For more information, please contact
